Graduated from the Contemporary Painting Course at Kyoto Saga University of Arts.
Completed a short-term exchange program in the Printmaking Course at Visva-Bharati University, India.
はまぐちは、まだ言葉や形になりきらない「生」の感覚を描いている。とくに、人間の内面にある子どもの頃の感覚、揺れ、不安、夢、孤独、安心など、感情とイメージとが溶け合うように同時に存在している感覚を丁寧に掬い取り、画面に定着しているのだ。鮮やかな色彩で覆われた画面には、具象と抽象を行き来するような、形を結びそうで溶け出しそうなイメージが幾重にも描かれ、時に物語のように構成されており、どこか、夢みがちな女の子の内面に浮かび広がるイメージを表象しているかのようである。
カルチャーの集積地、京都で生まれ育ち、アウトサイダーアート、サブカルチャー、漫画、絵本、神話などを憧れの対象とし、人間の空想や想像により生まれた世界に安らぎを見出してきた彼女の表現は、個人的な記憶や感情から出発しながら、その世界は時に神話や宇宙的な感覚へと接続されていく。
大学卒業直後の2002年、村上隆が主催する現代アートフェスティバル「GEISAI」において奈良美智個人賞を受賞したことを皮切りに、2004年には同「GEISAI」金賞を受賞。翌2005年には美術出版社『みづゑ』絵本部門大賞を受賞し、海外メディアにおいて村上隆に言及されるなど、早くから活動が評価された。2010年には国立国際美術館で開催された「絵画の庭ーゼロ年代日本の地平からー」に参加。出品作品が同館に収蔵。2013年には東京都現代美術館の「オバケとパンツとお星さま - こどもが、こどもで、いられる場所」に参加。子育て期の休養を経て、近年は再び精力的に国内外を問わず数多くの展覧会に参加している。

Sakurako Hamaguchi paints the sensations of life that have not yet fully taken shape in words or forms. She carefully captures the lingering feelings of childhood that remain within us—uncertainty, anxiety, dreams, loneliness, comfort—moments in which emotions and images coexist and dissolve into one another. These elusive sensations are gently gathered and fixed onto the surface of her paintings.
Her vividly colored canvases are layered with images that move between figuration and abstraction, forms that seem at once to emerge and dissolve. At times, these compositions unfold like narratives, evoking the expanding inner landscapes of a dreamy child’s imagination.
Born and raised in Kyoto, a city rich in cultural traditions and contemporary influences, Hamaguchi developed a deep fascination with outsider art, subculture, manga, picture books, and mythology. Finding solace in worlds born from human imagination and fantasy, she has cultivated a visual language that begins with personal memories and emotions yet gradually opens toward mythic and cosmic dimensions.
Shortly after graduating from university, Hamaguchi received the Yoshitomo Nara Prize at GEISAI, the contemporary art festival founded by Takashi Murakami, in 2002. She subsequently won the Gold Prize at GEISAI in 2004, followed by the Grand Prize in the Picture Book Division of Mizue, a leading Japanese art magazine, in 2005. Her work attracted early international attention and was mentioned in overseas media in connection with Takashi Murakami.
In 2010, she participated in The Garden of Painting: Japanese Art of the 2000s, held at the National Museum of Art, Osaka, where her work was subsequently acquired for the museum’s collection. In 2013, she participated in Ghosts, Pants and Stars: A Place Where Children Can Remain Children at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
After taking time away from her practice during the years of raising children, Hamaguchi has returned to active artistic production and has recently participated in numerous exhibitions both in Japan and internationally.
In 2025, she created illustrations for Snack Futari, a serialized novel by Hiromi Kawakami published in The Yomiuri Shimbun.
